Just a note, I’m going to keep the scheduled posts scheduled for the next week or so because while I am spiraling with panic over the state of my country, I’m going to keep up the content when I can. So just know, not being blasé, not moving on, I’m constantly thinking about what happened at the US Capital, but I’m keeping the posts going.
Finally at the December 2020 wrap-up! I read a grand total of 11 books and there were all solidly good! I didn’t get any new favorites, but I also didn’t get any 1 or 2 stars which is good!
Also while we’re talking 2020, no fourth quarter book haul because I just don’t want to format it.
With that out of the way, let’s just jump right into it!
Queer Lit Readathon
Man, already this feels like ages ago. I read 4 books, 3 of which were on my TBR and I got a bingo three different ways!
The Midwinter Witch by Molly Knox Ostertag – 4 stars
I finished a series this year! These graphic novels are really sweet and cover a couple of different topics really well. This one hit me more than expected, as it’s about a big family gathering and how Aster will or won’t fit in due to his magic.
The Electric Heir by Victoria Lee – 4.5 stars
I finally got to this arc! This was so delayed as it came out in March, but it was so worth the wait. Read my full review here!
The Traitor’s Crown by Victoria Lee – 4 stars
I decided to read this Feverwake short story after finishing the sequel. It’s about Calix’s younger years and it was very good!
The Black Flamingo by Dean Atta – 3.75 stars
I think the reason I didn’t rate this 5 stars like everyone else was one, I think I do better with novels in verse when it’s and audiobook and two, there wasn’t as much drag as I’d been lead to believe. It was still good, don’t get me wrong, I do recommend this book, but it’s mostly a coming-of-age book as we follow Michael as he grows up. It’s only near the last part does the drag come into it.

The Stars We Steal by Alexa Donne – 3.25 stars
This book is part Persuasion by Jane Austen retelling, part “The Bachellor” set in space. I really enjoyed the world-building of this sci-fi story! The characters were great and the romance was decent. I just feel like the ball was dropped with the b-plot.
Drifters by V.S. Holmes – 3 stars
I was hoping for more “sci-fi” than “survival story,” but it was good. It’s the sequel to “Travelers,” but after reading the book 3 preview, I don’t think I’ll be finishing the series.
How to Be an Antiracist by Ibram X. Kendi – 4.5 stars
This was a super dense but very informative book on antiracism vs racism. It took me a while to read, but I do recommend it. It’s a great starting point for a primer on several different topics, then you can go out and read more deeply on those topics
I’ll Be Home for Christmas by Mason Deaver – 4 stars
It’s a short story set after I Wish You All the Best about Christmas! It’s the one holiday thing I finished this month and it was so good!!
Binti by Nnedi Okorafor – 4 stars
I did just read this in February, but I wanted to reread it and ended up enjoying it it so much more! Not having an audiobook lets me better understand the unique sci-fi concepts this book gave me! Highly, highly recommended.
Chemically Enhanced Butch by Ty Bo Yule – 3.75 stars
I’m not going to say anything here because I really went off in my review of it, so read that here!
Binti: Home by Nnedi Okorafor – 3.5 stars
The sequel! Obviously I can’t speak much about the plot, but it did kind of feel like it had some middle book syndrome. However, it did manage to answer some personal questions regarding Binti and her family, which I appreciate. Whenever I get the chance, I’ll definitely be reading book 3!
