This tag was started by Adam of Memento Mori. This is my favorite end-of-year tag to do in order to wrap up some of my reading for the year, so let’s jump on in!
1. The longest book you read this year and the book that took you the longest to finish.
The longest book I read is Crazy Rich Asians by Kevin Kwan at the very, very end of the year.
The book that took the longest to finish was Call Us What We Carry by Amanda Gorman even though it’s a fairly short poetry book. I accidentally returned it too early mid-read, so I was in library loan limbo for two months before I could finish it.
2. A book you read in 2022 that was outside of your comfort zone.
I’m pretty good about reading many different genres, but I believe All Her Little Secrets by Wanda M. Morris was the first adult thriller I’ve ever read! I do feel like I also have to mention Ledge by Stacey McEwan as my first New Adult “romantacy” book.
3. How many books did you re-read in 2022?
I reread 9 books!
4. Favorite re-read of 2022.
The majority of the books I reread were in the Wayward Children series by Seanan McGuire, so it’s really hard to pick just one. I’m going to go classic with the first in the series Every Heart a Doorway by Seanan McGuire as it’s just such a great start for the series.
5. A book you read for the first time in 2022 that you look forward to re-reading in the future.
There are a lot of books I’d love to reread and re-experience, but one book that surprised me by how much I’ve thought about it after the fact and I’d want to re-expereince it is Radiance by Grace Draven. It’s the only adult fantasy romance book I’ve loved and it really worked for me! Maybe it’s because it was unique in how it spun the arranged marriage trope and avoided love-at-first-sight.
6. Favorite single short story or novella that you read in 2022
For short story, I have to say “The Thing About the Jack-o’-Lanterns” by Maggie Damken in the Xenocultivars: Stories of Queer Growth anthology edited by Isabela Oliveira & Jed Sabin was really the stand out for the year. It was short and sweet, but still almost made me cry!
For novella, I’m going to avoid singing the praises of the Wayward Children series for a third question and instead highlight A Prayer for the Crown-Shy by Becky Chambers as a phenomenal edition in the Monk & Robot series. This series is perfect for those feeling overwhelmed.
7. Mass Appeal: A book you liked and would recommend to a wide variety of readers.
Home Before Dark by Riley Sager is a solid horror book for fans of haunted house stories!
8. Specialized Appeal: A book you liked but would be hesitant to recommend to just anyone.
I’m only hesitant to recommend this book to everyone because it is very explicit in regards to sex and talks of fertility/pregnancy, but Three Kings by Freydís Moon was really, really good!
9. Reflect on your year as a bookish content creator (goals met, good/bad memories, favorite posts you made, etc).
I’ll go into goals in another post in the coming days. For now, let’s start with the not-so-great memories so I can end on a high note, shall we?
I still have a lot of drafts of series of posts I want to do but I’m too anxious to post them because they’re not the standard posts I’ve seen other people do and I’m not sure if they’ll be received well.
On a pure numbers level, I still haven’t hit pre-hiatus numbers in terms of views and visitors. I don’t regret the break I took last year, but it’s a little disheartening to see it in the stats pages WordPress so helpfully provides. I’m not doing this for money or recognition, but I do feel like we should recognize that numbers can hurt.
Okay, onto the good stuff! I liked being able to participate in book tours and otherwise received a bunch of cool ARCs from authors and publishers! I continued to promote queer books which is always a goal I have in mind!
Here are some of my favorite posts I made this year!
- Books with Optical Illusions on the Covers
- More of My Favorite Indie Books
- Book Covers with Secrets in the Glasses
I made an Instagram and I’m enjoying it! Taking pictures and making reels is really different from book blogging and I’m not about to give up one for the other, but it’s fun to have the variety.
And that is the end of the tag! If you want to complete this tag, consider yourself tagged!
