Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme brought to you by That Artsy Reader Girl. It was previously hosted at The Broke and the Bookish.
This week’s topic is “Characters Whose Job I Wish I Had.” This is a wild mix of actual jobs and fantasy jobs that I wish I could do, but probably could never actually do.
Echo After Echo by A.R. Capetta
Every time I read a theater based book, I start to reminisce about my brief time in high school theater. As much as I’ve love to be like Zara, the leading lady, I’d probably be more set for Eli’s job of backstage work.
Sorcery of Thorns by Margaret Rogerson
Do I need to say anything more than “sword wielding librarian”? Because I don’t think I need to say anything more than “sword wielding librarian.”
Something to Talk About by Meryl Wilsner
I wouldn’t be able to handle the pressure of being a celebrity’s personal assistant (I can barely handle calling people on the phone), but it sounds like I would get a bunch of amazing stories to tell people.
Seafire by Natalie C. Parker
*in the voice of that one Vine* I wanna be a pirate, baby!
The Haunting of Tram Car 015 by P. Djèlí Clark
If the vibes of this book are anything to go by, working at the Ministry of Alchemy, Enchantments and Supernatural Entities would just involve a lot of research into supernatural and a lot of chasing after ghosts, which sounds awesome.
On a Sunbeam by Tillie Walden
These characters restore old ruins in space and travel in a fish ship. If I can’t do that in the next 50 years, what is the point of space travel?!
To Be Taught, If Fortunate by Becky Chambers
Exploring the galaxy? Seeing new planets and organisms? Yes, please.
Reign of the Fallen by Sarah Glenn Marsh
Being a necromancer just sounds really cool, I don’t know what else to tell you.
Let’s Talk About Love by Claire Kann
Fun fact, when I was a teenager, I actually applied twice to work at my local library reshelving books, but I never got the job. Yes I already mentioned being a librarian earlier, but this is working at an Actual Library, something I have considered in my small time job hunting.
Travelers by V.S. Holmes
And the last on this list is… the job I’m actively trying to get. Lifting the curtain a little bit, but yes, I’m trying to become an archaeologist! I doubt I’ll find any sci-fi elements, but who knows what you’ll find on an excavation!
What’s a job you wish you had that you’ve seen in a book? Let me know in the comments below or link your Top Ten Tuesday post!
Great list! Sorcery of Thorns made my list this week too & you’ve reminded me I really need to pick up Haunting on Tram Car 15.

Great post!! I’d most likely be terrible at it, but I like the idea of being a celebritys pa and I’m interested by a book about a sword weilding librarian. I like your take on the ttt – I was pretty stuck but in the end I went for a quiz on jobs from fantasy books. See how many you get! https://hundredsandthousandsofbooks.blog/2021/03/02/ttt-guess-the-fantasy-jobs-but-they-get-more-and-more-obscure/

I love the idea of being a necromancer. Reign of the Fallen was such a fun book too.
